Also, array of service parts for at least eight sectors of the
economy, including aviation and aerospace, energy, oil and gas,
engineering industry, printing industry, plastic industry, hydraulic and
pneumatic as well as automotive industry are to be established with the
Medical City.
It is estimated that at the full completion and operation of the Medical City, the manufacturing company intends to employ about 35, 000 indigenes and other Nigerians.
Conducting the ground breaking ceremony, the governor described it as epochal in all respects for a university to be dedicated entirely to the training of medical and paramedical professionals in this part of the world.
He noted that with the singular focus, the university would not only be a source for the provision of the highly needed manpower for the health institutions in the country, but trail blazer in the production of high quality medical professionals.
Emmanuel who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Moses Ekpo, said the institution will make the state a “medical destination” in Africa as well as establish a centre of excellence for medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery services.
He posited that the Medical City was the biggest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) drive in Nigeria, saying the state government was proud to be associated with the Thompson and Grace group.
Emmanuel pledged to give the company and other similar investors all the necessary encouragement in keeping with the state government vow to boost investment climate in the state.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Thompson and Grace Group, Dr. Isaac Thompson Amos, had said when the dream is fully realised, “we would also have reduced the need by Nigerians to travel to the United States of America, United Kingdom, India, China, Germany or any other country in search of cure and healings.”
He said: “No more would our people be victims of preventable, treatable and curable diseases because of ignorance and non-availability of requisite medical training, equipment and infrastructure.
“Accordingly, we undertake to team up with our government at the federal, state and local levels to contribute to the overall development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
“We call on all the government and relevant governmental agencies to team up with us in the areas of provision of basic infrastructure such as roads, water, electricity, security, licence issuances, permits, approvals, among others as we seek to actualise our dreams.”
